Because the counselor’s work depends on emotionally connecting with others, it is important to maintain strict vigilance of one’s own emotions, particularly emotions that correspond to those expressed by clients. Learning to read emotional cues in self and others is an essential emotional intelligence strategy I will incorporate into my work. Starting with myself, being aware of emotions means first tuning into the body. Emotions manifest first as physiological responses to some type of trigger—triggers that include our own thoughts. Instead of labeling the physiological response prematurely, I can simply notice that response for what it is and reframe it with clear intent to unpack what the response represents and how I can manage that response effectively.

Common elements of gothic literature include mystery, fear, omens, curses, preternatural settings, gloomy atmospheres with a hint of being haunted, some dimension of the supernatural, romance, an arch-villain, nightmare situations, anti-heroes and ladies in distress (Mulvey-Roberts; Smith). Popular examples on both sides of the Atlantic include works by the Bronte sisters, works by Poe, and Shelley’s Frankenstein. The gothic was a popular genre form in the 19th century. It was romantic, vibrant, dark, brooding, frightening, exciting, and visceral. It resonated with readers because after a century of Enlightenment (hyper-emphasis on reason and naturalism), the romantic era had ushered in something desperately needed: feeling. Abstract
This proposal describes the need for an ethical standard in counterintelligence. It discusses how an analysis of the formation of the counterintelligence program under Angleton can provide insight into what went wrong with counterintelligence and how those problems can be prevented in the future. It uses a combination of conflict theory, structural functionalism and critical theory to explore the dimensions of counterintelligence in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The research design is qualitative with the case study approach to Angleton’s counterintelligence serving as the method. The aim of the research is to provide an ethical framework that could be used to help the counterintelligence enterprise collaborate more effectively with the private sector in the future.
